Profile of the YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge:

The mission of the Young Women's Christian Association is twofold:  the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women.   In 1967 a bitter struggle occurred in the Baton Rouge YWCA over full participation by African-American women members.  A group of white women abandoned the YWCA and formed the Young Women's Christian Organization, now dissolved.  Meanwhile several courageous women of both races worked together to form a newly organized, rechartered YWCA, dedicated to the One Imperative: "to thrust its collective powers toward the elimination of racism wherever it exists and by any means necessary."   All programs of the YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge are designed to eliminate racism, to empower women and their families or both.

For more than 30 years, the YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge has sponsored Dialogue on Race, which brings together men and women of diverse races and cultures for frank discussion on institutional racism.  Currently 10 to 12 separate six-week sessions are held each year as a community service.

Among current programs are Head Start,  a family literacy program that provides child care, parenting training, support, and self-sufficiency skills to the teen parents attending Istrouma High School and Glen Oaks High School.  The Family Resource Center (an Even Start program) offers vocational training, GED preparation, and parenting education for adults; and early childhood education for their children aged 2 to 5.  You & Me & HIV provides age-appropriate HIV education for students K-12.  The Women's Financial Information Program disseminates basic financial information to help women build money management skills and gain control over their lives by taking charge of their finances.  Melrose Extended Day,  in partnership with five other United Way agencies,  provides a multidimensional program to youngsters in the Melrose East area.  Connections is a networking program for business and professional women that meets monthly for informative luncheons.

The YWCA's commitment to promoting women's health is embodied in the following goal, which is a part of the five-year strategic plan recently adopted:  "The YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge will demonstrate its commitment to improving the quality of life and health of women and their families."  ENCOREplus provides breast and cervical health education and arranges screenings for medically underserved women.   The target population is African-American women aged 40 and older because of their significantly higher risk of mortality from these cancers, compared with that of the general population of women.
